Earlier today, Apple officially launched CarPlay, previously known as “iOS in the Car”. Apple had first introduced it as one of the major features of iOS 7 at WWDC 2013.
CarPlay integrates iPhone with your car to make calls, use Maps, listen to Music and access messages.
While we’ve seen several leaked photos and videos of how the feature will work, Apple has strangely not provided much details.
However, a new promotional video by Volvo, one of the launch partners, have just given us the first glimpse of what Apple CarPlay’s user interface will look like.
As you can see in the video below, CarPlay features a familiar Home screen interface with icons for Phone, Music, Maps, Messages, Podcasts and even third-party apps like Spotify. It looks like users will be able to access it from the car’s native interface or by pushing-and-hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri. It also seems to show the strength of the cellular network.
Volvo’s press release also reveals that CarPlay will work over Wi-Fi network like AirPlay in the near future. I found it strange that CarPlay needed Lightning-enabled devices, so it’s good to know that it will work over Wi-Fi in the future.
Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are expected to unveil new cars that will feature Apple CarPlay at the Geneva International Motor Show later this week, so we should get even more details soon.
