Apple retains the top spot in U.S. smartphone marketshare

iPhone has retained the number one spot among smartphones in the U.S. yet again. While iOS was trailing compared to Android, Apple was clearly ahead of the competition in terms of sales with a marketshare of 41.6% in January 2014, while Samsung was at second place with 26.7% of the pie. These figures were published in comScore’s latest MobiLens and Mobile Metrix reports which has taken quarterly figures into account.
Interestingly, Apple’s marketshare has risen by 1% since October, despite the launch of competitive smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Nokia Lumia 1520, the LG G2 and the Google Nexus 5. Although Android dominates the mobile OS segment with a 51.7% marketshare, it has seen a drop of 0.5% since October. So technically, Apple has gained marketshare while Android OEMs have lost some of it, mostly due to the slump in sales of Motorola and HTC smartphones. The BlackBerry platform also lost marketshare by 0.5% while Microsoft’s Windows Phone was at 3.2%, thus remaining unchanged.
It is important to note that iOS marketshare only includes iPhones and not the iPads, which would show a further increase in marketshare. Samsung however could turn out to be the next major manufacturer in the U.S. with the likes of the Galaxy S5 and other flagships set to arrive this year.
comScore’s metrics take ownership data as well as online surveys into account, so it’s a proper indicator of where manufacturers stand as far as marketshare is concerned.
