Apple says 8GB iPhone 5c intended to boost sales in mid-tier LTE markets

Apple today announced an 8GB iPhone 5c in UK, France, Germany, Australia, and China that is priced £40 cheaper than the 16GB iPhone 5c.
In an official statement, Apple confirmed that the 8GB iPhone 5c is targeted at increasing sales in countries with LTE, by lowering the entry price. Re/codereports:
“The mid-tier iPhone segment is growing year over year and the 8GB model provides a more affordable option for markets where LTE is becoming more established,” an Apple representative told Re/code. The iPhone 5c, unlike the iPhone 4s, which is also still sold, supports LTE networks.
The 8GB iPhone 5c wasn’t launched in the US, presumably because the subsidised price of the 16GB model is already quite low, at $99.
The iPhone 5c was originally positioned as a mass market device that would help Apple increase its smartphone marketshare, but the device hasn’t sold as well as Apple expected, with the iPhone 5s outselling the iPhone 5c by a factor of 2.
